Battery technology is evolving quickly and will be a key part of the solution to managing inconsistent supply from renewable energy generation. Understanding the energy storage life cycle provides important insights in preparing for a renewable future. Lithium ion batteries are commonplace in handheld devices, but their use is expanding rapidly in energy storage for renewable energy and electric vehicles. These batteries are highly recyclable, but we currently recover only 3% in handheld devices.

How important are batteries in the shift towards renewable, non-polluting energy supply? What new technologies hold the greatest promise? When will these solutions be ready for mass roll-outs? What do we need to do to prepare for an exponential increase in lithium ion batteries? What are the roles for individuals, governments, researchers and other organisations.
