School Curriculum Resources
Curriculum is one of the five focus areas of the Actsmart Schools Program. The program supports schools to adopt sustainable practices into the management of waste, water, energy and school grounds/biodiversity. Introducing new sustainable practices provides a stimulus to introduce new teaching and learning programs.
Sustainability is one of three cross curriculum priorities in the Australian Curriculum. There are three key concepts to the sustainability priority: systems, world views and futures with nine organising ideas to support the delivery of these concepts.
Actsmart Schools offers free services and resources, for example a Curriculum Best Practice Guide with step-by-step instructions and recommendations to help schools integrate sustainability across all learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. Schools can be rewarded for their efforts by gaining Actsmart Schools accreditation for the effective delivery of sustainability education through the curriculum.
The program offers support to schools by providing free services and resources which include:
- education officers to offer advice
- professional development activities for teachers
- a regular e-bulletin with information on activities, organisations and events that support sustainability education in the curriculum
- an easy-to-use Curriculum Best Practice Guide, aligned to the Australian Curriculum that focuses on:
- sustainability across the curriculum
- student learning experiences
- and evaluating.
Actsmart Schools also has curriculum units (P-Y10) in energy, waste, water and biodiversity that are aligned to the ACT Curriculum and complement the Australian Curriculum.
