ACTSmart Business and Office Awards 2011

Award receipientThe ACTSmart Business & Office Awards were held in June 2011 and attracted many entries across Canberra. The Awards recognised the achievements of Canberra businesses and offices in implementing effective waste management practices and reducing waste going to landfill. 

Awards Gala Breakfast

The Awards were presented at a gala breakfast on Tuesday 7 June 2011. Participants of the ACTSmart Business and Office programs were invited to attend.

2011 Award Categories and Winners

There were seven award categories for the 2011 ACTSmart Business & Office Awards including awards for excellence, innovation and leadership.
1. Biggest reduction of waste to landfill
Awarded to the business or office that has the largest reduction of waste going to landfill (worked out as a percentage of overall waste reduced)

Winner - Schiavello (ACT)


2. Biggest recycler
Awarded to the business or office that has the largest volume of waste diverted from landfill to recycling.

Winner - Calvary Health Care Belconnen


3. Innovation excellence
Awarded to a business or office that has implemented an innovative idea or process to support their recycling program.

Winner - Schiavello (ACT)


4. Motivation excellence
Awarded to a business or office that has implemented an effective staff motivation system to improve its waste management.

Winner - Canberra Stadium


5. Corporate award
Awarded to an organisation for outstanding performance in making waste management business practices the cornerstone of its business development strategy.

Winner - Greenhouse Emporium


6. Small business/office award
Awarded to a small business or office (with less than 40 employees) for achievement and leadership in adopting waste management practices that reduce its environmental impact and strengthen its commercial viability.

Winner - DR Fisher Building Projects


7. Minister's award for leadership
Awarded to an individual for outstanding leadership in waste management abatement, and best demonstrating the spirit of supporting the program.

Judging Panel

This year's Awards were be judged by Ros Malouf, Manager Business Unit, Climate Change and Natural Environment and Anne Prince, APC Environmental Management.

Ros Malouf's experience in the waste industry led her to develop and manage the ACTSmart Business and Office programs. The programs are currently in their third successful year.

Anne Prince is widely recognised for pioneering and implementing innovative waste minimisation programs particularly in remote and island communities as well as delivering detailed strategic waste reduction and management plans across the nation.
