Choosing the right plants
Your choice of plants and where you plant them are important factors in achieving a successful, waterwise garden.
- Use low water-use plants, such as plants adapted to dry conditions and the Canberra area. But remember that plants will only be drought tolerant after they have established a good root system. So it’s important to feed and water new plants until they are established.
- Group plants with similar water needs into different watering zones so each plants only gets the amount of water it needs.
- Place plants in the correct soil and microclimate position to meet their growing needs – the right plants in the right place.
- Plants trees and shrubs where they create shade and protection against winds and sun.
- Take advantage of sheltered spots to grow more sensitive plants.
- Consider selecting plants that tolerate dry conditions and are at least moderately tolerant of frost.
- Replace some lawn areas with permeable paving, pebbles or hardy ground covers that require less water.
- Consider using turf varieties that do not use a lot of water. Ask your local turf supplier for advice.
- Regularly remove weeds that compete with your plants for water.
To identify low water-use plants:
- Ask your local nursery for advice. Some plant labels contain information about water requirements.
- The online Canberra Plant Selector can help you choose garden plants on the basis of their water requirements, as well as sun, shade and frost tolerances.
- Look for plants with characteristics of drought tolerance, including: thick or waxy coated leaves, small or needle-like leaves, hairy or felty leaves, silver or grey foliage, or fleshy leaves that store water.
Some exotics, including established roses, photinia, nandina and Camellia sasanqua have proven to be relatively tough survivors during extended dry periods. Many new release strappy leafed and architectural plants such as cordylines and yuccas are also relatively drought tolerant.
