Water efficiency labelling and standards (WELS) scheme
The WELS water rating label provides water efficiency information for water-using household products.
What it is
WELS is Australia's water efficiency labelling scheme that requires certain products to be registered and labelled with their water efficiency.
It is compulsory for
- clothes washing machines
- tap equipment
- toilet (lavatory) equipment
- urinal equipment
WELS is optional for flow controllers.
How to use it
The WELS label carries two important pieces of information to help the consumer to compare products – efficiency stars and water consumption or water flow figures.
- The one to six star rating allows a quick assessment of the model's water efficiency - the more stars on the label the more water efficient the product
- The water consumption or water flow figure shows the water consumption per use for whitegoods and sanitary ware) or the water flow per minute for plumbing products based on laboratory tests.
When you are shopping for appliances or plumbing fittings, choose a product that has the highest star rating you can find for a model that is within the size/capacity range that you want as well as within your price range.
The WELS website will tell you more about the water efficiency labelling, and it lists all current WELS rating for individual product models.
Some commercial websites provide ready access to WELS ratings along with prices, sizes and other features of models on the market, along with information on retailers.
