Straws Suck campaign

Have you ever thought about what happens to a single-use plastic straw after its useful life of twenty minutes? It is estimated that 10 million plastic straws are used in Australia everyday.

Straws Suck is a campaign to help rid Canberra cafes and bars of plastic waste, primarily single-use plastic straws.  We encourage businesses to make a pledge to reduce the amount of single-use plastic straws they provide customers and participating businesses will be provided with marketing materials to promote their pledge to customers.

We also encourage patrons to refuse single-use plastic straws.

Single-use plastic straws are harmful to the environment and are regularly in the list of the top 10 most littered items.  Straws are a harmful and non-recyclable type of waste and as a soft plastic they don't break down, they end up polluting waterways and harming wildlife, and they're made using polluting fossil fuels.
