Waste Behaviour Change
Here are some tips on changing behaviours, taken from the Actsmart Schools Waste Best Practice Guide:
- book a visit for your green team or sustainability committee with an Actsmart Schools officers to discuss your current situation
- ensure bins are set up in stations so that a landfill bin is always located next to another, such as a mixed recycling or paper recycling bin. This reduces contamination
- place landfill and recycling stations in the playground and other eating areas – always make sure the bins go back in the same place after they have been emptied
- provide clear signage or posters to explain what goes in each bin Signage order form
- encourage student teams to monitor recycling and organics bins for contamination
- present awards to good recyclers at assembly – make it fun!
- promote waste-free lunches to reduce the number of landfill products coming into the school
- borrow the Actsmart Schools interactive waste display or book a tour to the Recycling Discovery hub
- motivate staff and students to participate in waste and recycling events (e.g. Nude Food Day, National Recycling Week)
- keep the school community informed with reminders via newsletters and at assemblies
